Discover the Moor Route – a scenic circular trail through moorlands, forests and villages, rich in nature, history and serene lake views.
Starting from the railway station in Neustadt am Rübenberge, the Moor Route invites cyclists and hikers to immerse themselves in the quiet beauty of moorland landscapes shaped by centuries of human and natural history. The route leads towards Poggenhagen and on through the district of Moordorf, where traces of traditional moorland settlement and architecture can still be seen. Street names such as “Am Schiffgraben” reflect the area’s long relationship with the wetlands. Continuing past the Wunstorf air base, the path winds through woodland and across the Wunstorf Moor before joining the Steinhuder Meer Circular Trail. Here, the route follows the lakeshore towards Mardorf. A short detour leads to an observation tower within the “Ostufer Steinhuder Meer” nature reserve – a haven for biodiversity where the alder swamp merges into fenland and reed beds. From this peaceful vantage point, the views across the lake and its wetlands are truly memorable. Approaching Mardorf, visitors encounter the characteristic moor cottages along the lakeside path. Wooden boardwalks branching towards the water provide perfect places to rest, reflect, and learn more about the formation of the Steinhuder Meer, the history of the Wilhelmstein Island and the region’s flora and fauna. The route continues into Mardorf’s charming centre before heading towards Schneeren, whose historic core with timber-framed houses and tree-lined streets offers timeless rural charm. Surrounded by fields and forests, the trail finally returns to Neustadt – completing a round tour rich in tranquillity and natural wonder.
