The Moorhennies Trail South Circular Route invites visitors to experience nature and local history in an immersive and interactive way. Along the route, 31 information boards share fascinating insights into the landscapes, wildlife and stories of the region. Each station combines education with discovery, making the trail both an outdoor classroom and a cultural journey. The path also comes alive through sound: QR codes on the signs link to audio recordings where contemporary voices bring history to life. For groups, portable speakers allow the experience to be shared collectively, enriching the exploration with authentic storytelling. The trail takes its name from “Moorhennies”, a tale written in 1903 by Neustadt publisher Wilhelm Sicius. Set between the moors and the River Leine during the turbulent years of the Thirty Years’ War, the story centres on the historic Moorkrug, now an important station on the southern route. Developed by the Poggenhagen Cultural and Beautification Association in cooperation with the Neustadt Angling Club and the local NABU nature group, the Moorhennies Trail represents a harmonious blend of culture, ecology and community spirit. Supported by the environmental lottery BINGO, the Hanover Region and the town of Neustadt am Rübenberge, the project reflects a shared commitment to preserving both heritage and environment. A walk here is more than a trail – it is a journey through time, nature and tradition.
