Standing tall above the waters of Lake Steinhude, the sculpture “Der Hafenmeister” by Damjen Lajic watches over the boats gliding across the surface and the vessels returning to the harbour. With a commanding gaze, the harbour master appears to survey every movement, creating a symbolic connection between lake, people and tradition. Across the water, his counterpart on the island of Wilhelmstein mirrors his watchful presence, greeting visitors arriving at the island fortress pier. Installed in August 2019 by the Steinhuder Meer Tourism Association, this artwork quickly became a distinctive landmark of the promenade in Steinhude. It embodies both the maritime spirit of the region and the calm rhythm of life by the lake. The bronze figure, beautifully integrated into its watery surroundings, invites onlookers to pause and take in the serene expanse of northern Germany’s largest inland lake. “Der Hafenmeister” is more than just a sculpture – it is a tribute to the traditions of navigation and hospitality that define the Steinhuder Meer. Whether admired up close along the waterfront or from a distance with the shimmering lake as a backdrop, it captures the essence of this unique cultural and natural landscape.
