The church was first mentioned in documents in 1247. It was initially built as a three-aisled Romanesque basilica and rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1502. During restoration work in 1997, unknown ceiling paintings from the 17th century were rediscovered. The pilgrimage church is located on the Loccum-Volkenroda pilgrimage route.
