The foundations of the church were laid in 1129 and it was first mentioned in a deed of donation. Its original purpose was as a court church and burial church for Bishop Sigward of Minden.
Bishop Sigward of Minden had this small Romanesque church built as his own church. The well-traveled companion of Emperor Lothar III brought important fresco painters to Idensen, who painted the church according to Byzantine models. It is considered one of the most important sacred small buildings of the Romanesque period a gem that is unparalleled in Lower Saxony.
