“Papagena im Wind” by Klaus Wolf Simon captures the elemental power and motion of the Steinhuder Meer in sculptural form. Inspired by the natural forces of wind and water, the artwork embodies the invisible energy that surrounds the lake — a moment frozen in air, where movement and stillness intertwine. The sculpture evokes the image of wind sweeping around the human form, transforming the abstract into something almost tangible. Originally installed in 2008 by the Steinhuder Meer Tourismus GmbH, with support from the Foundation of the Cooperative Banks of Lower Saxony, the figure once stood dramatically in the shallow waters along the promenade, directly engaging with its elemental muse. After years of exposure to wind and weather, it found a new home in 2016 inside the Kunstscheune Steinhude, where it continues to fascinate visitors in a more sheltered environment. Now preserved indoors, “Papagena im Wind” invites quiet reflection and offers a deeper appreciation of how art and nature can merge. It stands not only as a testament to regional artistic creativity but also as a tribute to the enduring dialogue between humankind and the natural forces that shape the landscape of Lower Saxony.
