The stainless-steel gnomon of the sundial by Klaus Wolf Simon casts its shadow across two sets of dials, offering a fascinating visual interplay between art and science. The Roman numerals indicate the true local time of Steinhude, showing the sun’s highest point precisely at noon. The modern, Arabic numerals reflect Central European Time, which, unlike the sun’s movement, follows the 15th meridian east. As Steinhude sits on the 9th meridian, the difference between local solar time and Central European Time amounts to roughly 24 minutes – a small but intriguing reminder of our planet’s rotation and the relativity of time. Installed in 2009 by the Steinhuder Meer Tourismus GmbH, this work transforms a simple measurement tool into an artistic landmark in the park of Steinhude. Standing before the sundial, visitors can literally watch time unfold in harmony with nature. Whether part of a family outing, a school excursion, or a leisurely walk through the park, the piece invites quiet reflection on time, light, and the movement of the earth – making it much more than a scientific exhibit. It is both a teaching tool and a contemplative sculpture, connecting visitors with the timeless rhythm of the sun.
