Stork house

Historical building
Built in 1707 as a teacher’s house, later a carpentry, the Storchenhaus charms visitors with its long history and iconic stork’s nest.
Built in 1707, the Storchenhaus is a charming historical building that tells stories of local community life across centuries. Originally serving as a teacher’s and schoolhouse, it later became a carpenter’s workshop from 1851 until the mid-20th century, preserving its character through changing times. Today, its red-tiled roof carries a distinctive symbol of continuity and nature — a stork’s nest. For around 70 years, young storks have been raised here, making the building a living landmark of Neustadt am Rübenberge and an enduring part of regional tradition. The Storchenhaus offers visitors more than history; it embodies the harmonious connection between culture, architecture and wildlife that characterises the Steinhuder Meer region. Nestled in the heart of the historic townscape, it invites travellers, families and school groups alike to pause and observe one of the most graceful spectacles of nature. With its blend of heritage and life, the Storchenhaus is not only a window into the past but also a symbol of renewal and continuity — a place where history quite literally takes flight.
