Discover the “Steinhuder Hecht,” Germany’s first submarine invention — a marvel of 18th‑century ingenuity on the island fortress Wilhelmstein.
The “Steinhuder Hecht” stands as a remarkable symbol of early engineering ingenuity and maritime curiosity. Conceived by Count Wilhelm von Schaumburg-Lippe and designed by J. C. Praetorius, this pioneering vessel is recognised as the first submarine ever constructed in Germany. Inspired by his experiences when Count Wilhelm took command in Portugal in 1762, Praetorius envisioned a craft capable of movement both above and below the water. On the surface it was to be propelled by sails, while underwater the crew would power a tail fin by hand to drive it forward. A smaller prototype is said to have been tested in 1772 in the waters of the Steinhuder Meer. According to accounts, the vessel could accommodate a crew of eight and stay submerged for approximately twelve minutes, although the outcome of the trial remains uncertain. Today, visitors can explore drawings and a detailed model of the “Steinhuder Hecht” within the historic fortress on the island of Wilhelmstein. This fascinating exhibit brings to life an extraordinary chapter of scientific ambition and naval experimentation. Blending imagination, craftsmanship and history, it offers a unique glimpse into the inventive spirit that shaped both the island and the region’s cultural identity.
