Post buoy in Lake Steinhuder Meer

Sailing students from Mardorf made a bet with their sailing instructors that it would soon be possible to post mail on the Steinhuder Meer. A buoy was converted for this purpose. The idea made the rounds and was officially approved and supported by the post office. Since 1964, the mail buoy has been on the Steinhuder Meer from May to September and is emptied by the Garbsen Sailing Club and stamped with a special postmark. Every year, around 2,000 postcards are posted in the mail buoy.
