The Windmill “Paula”, standing proudly in the heart of Steinhude, is a landmark steeped in history and local pride. The story of milling here began in 1670 when Count Philipp of Schaumburg-Lippe granted Steinhude the right to build a windmill. The original post mill was lost to fire in 1911, but soon after, the current earth Dutch-style windmill—affectionately known as “Paula”—was purchased and brought to its present location. Over the decades, Paula has seen storms and near destruction, most notably when a severe gale caused serious damage. Thanks to the dedication of local residents and the founding of the “Verein zur Erhaltung der Steinhuder Windmühle e. V.”, this historic mill was lovingly restored to working condition. Today, the mill once again turns its sails to the winds of the Steinhuder Meer, preserving a piece of authentic Lower Saxon craftsmanship and community spirit. Visitors can explore the inner workings of the windmill, admire the traditional machinery, and gain insight into how grain was once ground by wind power alone. A visit to Paula offers not just a glimpse into rural history, but a heartfelt connection to the people who continue to keep this historic treasure alive. [1]
