Blacksmith Museum Helstorf

Museum
Once a working forge (1889–1965), the museum now brings blacksmithing to life alongside rural crafts in its charming barn exhibition.
Once an active village forge, the Hufschmiedemuseum Helstorf preserves the fascinating history of blacksmithing in rural Lower Saxony. Operating from 1889 to 1965, the former smithy now serves as a living museum where the sounds of hammer and anvil still ignite the imagination. On select Sundays between April and October, skilled blacksmiths bring the old trade back to life, showcasing their craft with impressive precision and inviting visitors to experience it hands-on. Next to the forge, the adjoining museum barn offers a captivating glimpse into traditional village life. Its carefully curated exhibits include historic tools such as looms and spinning wheels, a lovingly reconstructed farmhouse kitchen, a shoemaker’s and painter’s workshop, and even an ancient dugout canoe. Together, these displays paint a vivid picture of craftsmanship and everyday life in times past. Whether for families, school groups or individual travellers, the Hufschmiedemuseum Helstorf is an inspiring destination that connects cultural heritage with practical experience, turning history into a tangible encounter for all generations.
