Nourishment for the Soul

Nourishment for the Soul

Are you someone who craves history, art and culture? Then in our region there is certainly something for you on the menu. With the number of museums, exhibits, events and historically important places you could discover something new everyday.

Wilhelmstein Island Fortress

[TOP]
As an appetizer we would like to introduce you to the Wilhelmstein Island. The man-made isle (Count Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe had the island built from 1761 to 1765 to support his military fortress) is an exceptional experience in many ways. Where else can you take a ride on a historical boat in order to reach a museum or art exhibit? After a unique ride across the lake an exciting fortress museum awaits you. Here you’ll get a picture of the life of the island occupants in the old casemates. In the military history collection you see the "Steinhuder Hecht", believed to be the first German submarine in the world. From the tower of the fortress you will have an unbelievable panoramic view of the whole "Steinhuder Meer".

For a few years ago, the world of art discovered the fortress island. A cultural society had five small greenhouses built on the lawn around the old citadel. From May until October the exhibition "Transparencies-Art in Glasshouses" shows objects and installations from different artists.

Sculpture Promenade and Art Barn

[TOP]
Contemporary artists have depicted the natural forces of the earthly elements in their modern works, as well as depicting the myths and legends that are imbedded in landscape of "Steinhuder Meer". Those interested in art must absolutely stroll along the sculptures on the promenade of Steinhude. Another popular place for artists of all shades and colors is the art barn in the historical barn district in Steinhude.

Museum of Fisher and Weaver an Toy Museum

[TOP]

The exhibit at this museum shows how life for the earlier generation on "Steinhuder Meer" was hard and depraved work. The museum is houst in a timber-framed house of the 1850s. People lived in the house until 1984, the owners hardly changed a thing for decades. And even today visitors get the impression the fisherman’s family have only just recently left the house.

The Toy Museum is housed in the Museum of Fisher an Weaver in Steinhude. Toys for boys and girls from the 19th and 20th centuries are shown. The abundance of toys sends children to a colorful wonderland and illustrates to grownups how toys reflect the prospects and expectations of the next generation.

Butterfly farm, "Insect World"

[TOP]
A visit to the Insect Museum in Steinhude is an exotic experience. Despite the name, here you will find more than just preserved specimens. Many of the terraria are full of flying and crawling things. The main attraction is the tropical hall where hundreds of colorful butterflies flutter around and suck nectar. To make these delicate beauties feel at home the temperature remains a comfortable 30 degrees with 90% humidity.

Romantic Bad Rehburg

[TOP]
For a completely different scene join a visit to the historical and glamorous spa Bad Rehburg. The 1786 bathhouse and the great hall (1841) were elaborately restored and together with the park landscape they make up the only maintained spa from the romantic period in Germany. High nobility and the members of the Hanover King’s Court used to pass their time here on health and amusement activities. Today you find musicians, artists and sculptors. In the new bathhouse a "Romantic spa-life experience" was created. This historical portrayal makes you participate in the everyday health and bath services of the 19th century.

Dino-Park in Münchehagen

[TOP]
In the Münchehagen you and your family can gaze in wonder at a prehistoric sensation. Around 250 fossilized footprints from two different types of giant dinosaurs are conserved in a glass hall as a natural memorial. You’re sure to get goosebumps walking along the 2.5 kilometer long path that leads through the earth’s epochs and is filled with over 220 life-sized dinosaur reconstructions.

Peat Museum in Landestrost Castle

[TOP]
The history of the moors and its development and the use of peat by earlier people is also full of secrets. Why, for example, are corpses kept so well-preserved in the bog for thousands of years? This and many other questions are answered at the peat museum in Landestrost Castle in Neustadt. In the "moors chambers" you can feel the soft moor floors under your feet give way. Or you can try, as hard as it is, to pull a loaded peat wagon. You will be astounded by the industrial products of days gone by, such as moor toothpaste, peat records and peat cheese.

But we still have much more to surprise you. For example, nothing has been said about that Landestrost Renaissance Castle in Neustadt from the 16th century or about the small romantic Sigwards church in Idensen with its valuable wall and ceiling frescos from the Middle Ages…as already said, with all the amazing things in our region you will certainly need more than one trip to see and do it all.

Now, at the end of our trip we would like to introduce you to two more historically important destinations.

Monasteries of Loccum and Mariensee

[TOP]
If you would like to feel deep peace and calm …then we would suggest a visit to our Cistercian Monasteries in Loccum and Mariensee. Twelve monks founded the Loccum Monastery in 1163, while the women’s convent was founded in Mariensee in 1207. Frugal, strict, geometric forms serve as an expression of the protest of Cistercian values against the despotism of the Pope and influence the architecture of the monastery church and cloisters. Above the church door in Loccum you read "Porta pata, cor magis—The door is wide open, the heart is even more." Visitors who seek peace are welcome in both monasteries. Silence, order and simple beauty impress every guest as if sheathed by a heavy but soft coat.

By now we would like to guess that our description of nature and vacation paradise of "Steinhuder Meer" has had its effect on you.
