The Mecca for Water Athletes, Cyclists and Hikers
Careful, "Steinhuder Meer" is addictive! Whoever spends a couple days here will certainly come back again…because here he discovers his great passion, for watersports, for the beach, cycling or simply for the maritime flair…an experience you never forget. Every trip to "Steinhuder Meer" offers something new to discover for interested and active people.
First we would like to tell you about sailing at "Steinhuder Meer" which is one of the most important sailing sites in Germany and has been used for sailing for more than a hundred years. The first yacht club was founded in 1906. Today there are more than twenty sailing clubs at "Steinhuder Meer". There are more than a thousand boats in docks in the summer. Guests can bring their own boats and tie them to one of the many docks, or they can rent a boat from one of the boat renters. The water offers enough room for casual and professional sailors. Each season an average of 40 regattas take place between German and European teams in different boat classes.
When you are sitting in a cozy coffee garden looking out on the lake, you will notice something else among the many white dots of the sails: the transparent sails of the windsurfers as they glide like dragonflies over the water. Surfers love "Steinhuder Meer" because of the shallow water and because so often the wind blows just right. The official launching point for surfers is the surfers beach at Mardorf on the north coast.
Over the last few years a lively kite surfing scene has arisen here. It is fascinating to watch how these thrill-seekers catapult over the water, making artful jumps on their boards connected to stunt kites. If you have never tried water sports and would like to give the wind and water a try, here at "Steinhuder Meer" you can take a course or an introductory lesson for sailing, surfing and kiting.
If you prefer taking it easy and resist physical challenges, then you can, of course, simply take a relaxing cruise on the water. The passenger ship transport connects Steinhude with Wilhelmstein Island and Mardorf. In addition, they travel to the white dunes and the new moor huts on the north coast by request. You can enjoy the lake on a ninety-minute, sixteen-kilometer long trip. You also have the opportunity to enjoy the sunset cruise which is offered once a week and casts off from Steinhude. On the stretch between the north and south coast our skippers transport bikes in case cyclists want to shorten their trip around the lake.
Ship tours and boat trips
Significantly smaller than the guest ships but no less popular are the pedal boats and motor boats that are available for rent in Mardorf and in Steinhude. Sit behind the steering wheel and feel like the captain of the high sea. Those who like a more rustic experience can discover "Steinhuder Meer" with a canoe. With a flat boat you can glide slowly over the glittering water, travel on dreamy canals and past the undisturbed natural beauty of the banks. Those who don’t have their own paddleboat can also take part in a guided tour.
For a nostalgic trip take a seat on a historic "emigrant". These typical wooden boats, powered by wind or motors, carry 20 to 30 passengers. The name "Auswanderer" now sounds like wanderlust. However, the name is fitting, for until 1866 "Steinhuder Meer" served as a border. The north and east coast were a part of the kingdom of Hanover while the southwest belonged to the Schaumburg-Lippe principality. Today the Emigrants travel the same routes as the large sightseeing ships and are driven by experienced skippers who entertain their passengers with anecdotes and historical stories. Our guests can also book the wooden boats for tours and individual sailing trips. For a particularly special day you can combine a trip on the Auswanderer along with your bike tour or hike.
Another great summer option at "Steinhuder Meer" is a relaxing beach vacation. Right next to the surfer’s beach in Madorf lies the large guarded beach, "Weiße Düne" (White Dunes). The kiddies can splash around in the shallow waters while the parents doze in the sun. With a playground and volleyball court nearby there is never a dull moment. If you would rather spend your beach vacation on an island, we suggest the beach island in Steinhude, the second largest meeting point for the sun-seekers at "Steinhuder Meer". The beach island was created in 1975 on the 35,000 square kilometer island and spoils our vacationers with beautiful sand beaches, vast lawns and plenty of playground toys. On evenings when Jazz or Rock music is played the island has a very special atmosphere.
The nature park at "Steinhuder Meer" is considered one of the most popular destinations for cyclists in Germany. No wonder, the terrain is flat, the landscape idyllic, and, above all else, the superior infrastructure makes the area easily navigable. Near the popular path around the lake, you can follow designated pathways or simply take part in a guided bike tour. Several hundred kilometers of pathway are signposted. A special attraction is our themed-tours in the moor highlighting, the history of the principality of the Schaumburg-Lippe or the world of modern wind energy as well as the historical water mills in Neustädter Land. Don’t worry about overstraining yourself. You can go as leisurely and comfortably as you like. For that reason there is a bike bus equipped with a special bike trailer that travels around "Steinhuder Meer" in the summer (June to August). So, jump in the saddle…
Nature is most intensely experienced by foot. Leave everything hectic and regulated behind. The journey is the goal as you peacefully delve into the different landscapes. Over 400 kilometers of hiking paths wind through the region. Especially good for hikers is the infrastructure of the 32 kilometer long path encircling the lake, a stretch where hikers are always aware that everything away from the path must remain undisturbed. The nature park regularly offers guided hikes through moors that allow hikers a "calculated" view of the protected areas. Four paths run through Steinhude and in Mardorf there are eight themed paths waiting to be discovered.
At the end of a nice day in or on the water, think how you would like to spend your next day. Your gaze stretches over the lake and meets the crest of the Rehburg mountains in the west that become exceptionally clear at dusk. Exactly there, embedded in a gentle hilly landscape, lies the 18-hole golf course Rehburg-Loccum. Guests are always welcome. From the hilltops you can enjoy a wonderful panorama of the far-reaching landscape. At "Steinhuder Meer" golf-park in Mardorf we also offer a 9-hole course, an 18-hole master’s course and a 3-hole putting green for those of all levels.
"What can the rest of the family do while I play golf for hours on end?" you might ask. We can help you out and your children will think surely our suggestion is "Mega-cool!" In 2008 the rope climbing course, "Sea Tree"was opened in a beautiful acorn forest right next to the youth hostel in Mardorf. On two dozen climbing stations under the canopy of the trees you can test your bravery, skills and strength - always safely roped up, of course. After this adventure your little ones are guaranteed to fall in bed tiredly and contentedly.
